Brambly Mess to Low Maintenance in Allington

Brambly overgrown messThe back garden to this rented Allington bungalow had become overgrown and unloved.

The landlords wanted to make it easier for the tenant to maintain.

Brambles, virginia creeper, old trellis and various self-sown plants, weeds and overgrowth were removed.

Once we could see what was there the next phase would be to work out how best to finish off to leave some green space whilst also making maintenance easier.

Garden after clearHey presto! A path and two beds appeared. It already looks better but the weeds would still take over without further action.

The two beds were dug out to a depth of about three inches below the path level to allow for an infill of weed-suppressing membrane and 20mm gravel.

20mm shingle laid over membrane

The final result. Weeds will struggle to make their way through and the far side, once re-seeded, will complete the lawn. If planting is wanted in the future it's an easy task to cut through the membrane and pop in a couple of specimen shrubs or put some pots straight on top.
